The Glen Island Approach Bridge is the sole connection for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to enjoy Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, NY. The popular park is open to the public year-round and contains the Glen Island Harbour Club, boathouses, picnic facilities and a public beach. The bridge is owned and operated by Westchester County Department of Public Works and serves as an important transportation link between the park and the New Rochelle community. Built in 1930, the bridge is recognized for its historical engineering and architectural significance and has been deemed eligible for preservation by the National Register of Historic Places. However, due to substandard features, prolonged age, and poor condition of the existing structures, the bridge is under need of repair.

The Glen Island Bridge Reconstruction Project will provide much needed safety improvements, upgrading the bridge deck, providing steel repairs, electrical and mechanical upgrades, new masonry and painting, and sidewalk replacement. During construction, a temporary bridge will be built to the north of the permanent bridge so that the community can continue to enjoy Glen Island Park while repairs are underway. This will expedite the construction schedule, increase safety, and ensure that disruptions to visitors and mariners are minimal.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Improvements (Rendering)
In September 2024, the project was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure Corporation in the amount of $79,670,066. The construction phase will commence on October 1, 2024, and is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2027. Westchester County and Kiewit are committed to administering a successful project while working in tandem with the community to make certain the needs of all bridge, park and harbor users are satisfied.

Upcoming Closure |

No closures of Glen Island that would affect normal operating hours are scheduled at this time. Any upcoming closures will be posted as they become available. |

Navigation Channel Closures |
|
Openings for marine traffic of the Glen Island Bridge have returned to the original operating schedule. On weekdays during regular work hours, pier repairs will be performed from a barge positioned in the navigation channel. A minimum 30-foot-wide navigation channel will remain open for boat traffic at all times. Outside of work hours, the barge will be moved out of the navigation channel. This work is expected until July 24, 2026. Mariners requiring full horizontal clearance under the bridge can contact the contractor via marine radio VHF Ch. 13/16 or call (908) 266-9106. The barge can be moved with 20 minutes' advance notice. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and minimize wake when transiting the area. |
